Hourly Pay Range (Minimum - Midpoint - Maximum):

$140.160 - $186.900 - $233.640


The stated pay scale reflects the range that Sharp reasonably expects to pay for this position.  The actual pay rate and pay grade for this position will be dependent on a variety of factors, including an applicant’s years of experience, unique skills and abilities, education, alignment with similar internal candidates, marketplace factors, other requirements for the position, and employer business practices.



What You Will Do
The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) position presents a physician perspective at the senior management level, represents and communicates administrative positions to and from the medical staff, and provides support and continuity to the medical staff organization and functions. This position provides medical leadership in collaboration with the senior management team and interfaces with the medical staff to further the clinical goals and strategic objectives of the hospital. The position champions the Quality and Patient Safety priorities for the hospital. Enhances communication in both directions between Medical Staff and Administration. Attends Medical Staff Committee meetings as assigned to interact with the chair and committee members, provide administrative input and support, and resolve Medical Staff/ Administrative issues or facilitate a timely resolution. • Participates in Executive and Medical Staff meetings to provide physician presence and input into the strategic and operational discussions and deliberations. • Acts as liaison for operational issues impacting the medical staff. • Focuses on aligning and engaging medical staff in efforts to deliver the highest standard of medical care. • Participates in development and implementation of systems and processes that ensure the highest quality of patient care, safety, and evidence based care across all disciplines and the hospital. • Represents the hospital in a professional, competent manner in the community, state, region, and national meetings. • Provides leadership and accountability in achieving system and hospital vision, quality, safety, financial and operations goals and targets.

Required Qualifications
  • Doctor of Medicine (MD)
  • 10 Years of clinical experience
  • California Physicians and Surgeons License - Medical Board of CA -REQUIRED

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's Degree - M.B.A. and/or M.P.H.
  • Relevant experience in medical staff organization leadership as a Vice President of Medical Affairs and/or Quality, Chief Medical Officer, Chief Quality Officer, or other senior physician leader in a similar-sized hospital or health system.

Essential Functions
  • Quality

    Partners with the clinical and operational leadership to develop a quality plan and execute achieving quality outcomes.
    Leads the Quality department and chairs the Quality Council, and participates in pertinent committees such as Pharmacy and Therapeutics, and Medical Staff department Committees as assigned.
    Regularly reviews quality related data and trends and works with team members to develop and implement corrective actions as appropriate.
    Maintains working knowledge of applicable national, state, and local laws and regulations affecting the medical staff including not limited to: Joint Commission, Title 22, CMS conditions of participation,
    Assists with compliance with patient care standards as defined by those professional organizations and regulatory agencies.
    Assures effective interfaces with external review organizations (e.g., Joint Commission, etc.).
    Provides an environment of clinical excellence and cost improvement that is data driven.
    Monitors physician and group practice patterns, presents data analysis and interpretation to physicians and medical and hospital committees for review.
    Facilitates, intervenes, and moderates all major physician-physician, physician-patient, and physician-staff concerns in collaboration with Risk Management, MEC, and other appropriate Medical Staff and management team members.
    Member of PSERT Committee and reviews patient care events and collaborate with Administration and Medical Staff to prevent occurrences.
    Supports and establishes a system that assures provision of necessary patient care services, timely, and at the appropriate level of care.
    Remains abreast of changing health care systems and their impact on the medical center and professional staff.
  • Safety

    Promotes the Sharp HealthCare Patient Safety Program by advocating for safety reporting and championing process changes and system design that leads to reduction in safety events.
    Achieves Culture of Safety survey response rates of 30% or higher, shares the survey results with staff and uses the survey results in improvement efforts.
    Accountable for promoting hand hygiene by establishing processes to monitor hand hygiene compliance, make results available to staff and achieves organizational target for hand hygiene compliance (80% or higher)
    Accountable for ongoing improvements in the reduction of healthcare associated infections.
    Accountable for working towards meeting top decile results in CMS publicly reported programs and Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade.
  • Service/People

    Collaborates with the leadership team to achieve “top box” patient experience scores in HCAHPS and Press Ganey surveys
    Regularly reviews patient satisfaction survey results, particularly as they relate to the medical staff. Ensure medical staff is regularly kept aware of results. Provides necessary coaching and counseling to medical and hospital staff to support high patient satisfaction scores.
    Establishes and maintains a collaborative working relationship with the medical, nursing and administrative staff in hospital and throughout system.
    Collaborates with the Medical Staff leadership and administrative leadership to optimize the satisfaction level of the Medical Staff as measured by the annual Physician Satisfaction Survey.
    Participates in decision-making regarding changes in Medical Directors and as appropriate, other medical staff leadership positions. Provides advice and consultative support to medical directors as needed.
    Collaborates, coordinates, and cooperates with other medical directors within Sharp HealthCare for an organization perspective.
  • Finance/Growth

    Partners with the CEO and executive team in ensuring the financial health of the organization. Provides consultative input to CEO and executive team regarding programmatic costs/cost efficiencies. Participates in and promotes cost savings initiatives.
    Serves as a resource in monitoring resource consumption and assists with discharge planning and resource utilization management issues.
    Provide oversight of physician documentation issues and coordinate education forums/presentations to ensure adherence to MD-DRG coding requirements.
    Assists Executive team in managing physician on-call issues as needed.
  • Community

    Represents Sharp Tri-City Medical Center and Sharp Healthcare at appropriate professional organization.
    Works cooperatively with the Marketing Department in presenting community health education. Acts as a spokesperson as appropriate.
