$53.570 - $69.120 - $77.410The stated pay scale reflects the range that Sharp reasonably expects to pay for this position. The actual pay rate and pay grade for this position will be dependent on a variety of factors, including an applicant’s years of experience, unique skills and abilities, education, alignment with similar internal candidates, marketplace factors, other requirements for the position, and employer business practices.
What You Will Do
To work as a collaborative member of the oncology healthcare team to provide information and support to families who have members affected with familial cancers, are themselves affected with familial cancers or who may be at risk for familial cancer. To identify families at risk, investigate disease present in the family, interpret and communicate information about the disorder, and analyze inheritance patterns and risks of recurrence. To provide supportive counseling to families, serve as a patient advocate and refer individuals to community and state supportive services. To serve as an educator and resource for other healthcare professionals and for the general public. Be a participant in research activities related to the field of medical and oncology genetics and genetic counseling.
Required Qualifications
- Master's Degree Genetic Counseling conferred by a GC program accredited by the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) is required within 90 days of hire
- California Genetic Counselor License - CA Department of Public Health -REQUIRED
- California Temporary Genetic Counselor License - CA Department of Public Health -REQUIRED
Preferred Qualifications
- Clinical experience in genetic counseling for cancer susceptibility
- Certified Genetic Counselor (CGC) - American Board of Genetic Counseling -PREFERRED
Other Qualification Requirements
- Must be eligible for Board certification by the ABGC. The ABGC Genetic Counselor License is required within 1 year of hire date. License to be tracked and maintained by the department.
Essential Functions
- Educational Resource
Recognized advisor to staff and/or groups in area of expertise. Acts as an educational resource to both customers and staff members.
Advise and assist staff upon the appropriateness of patient referrals or professional inquiries for cancer genetic consultation.
Participate in case conferences/tumor boards, in-services and continuing education events related to the position.
Conduct formal and informal education programs for physicians, genetic counseling students, other healthcare professionals and community.
Monitor and integrate new technologies, theories and resources into patient care, program design and education programs. - Lab Duties
Analyze and interpret clinical and/or laboratory findings.
Dictate report for referring physician.
Conduct literature reviews and consult with sub-specialists in relation to diagnostic workup, genetic risk assessment or genetic test result (i.e. genetic variant or rare syndrome).
Analyze and interpret information obtained from the patient, medical records, and resource materials.
Document all patient-related activities in medical records according to industry standards.
Coordinate handling/shipment of samples for specialized genetic testing offsite as appropriate and in connection with pathology department.
Assist with clinical studies, particularly in subject recruitment when appropriate. - Patient and Family Education
Provides pre and post procedure education/consultation to patient and family.
Ascertain the type of medical evaluation required.
Obtain patient, family and medical history.
Obtain and review pertinent medical records.
Provide risk assessment based on pertinent patient, family and medical history.
Make appropriate recommendations for genetic testing, evaluation or surveillance based on pertinent patient, family and medical history.
Facilitate patients understanding of genetic, medical, and psychosocial information including risks, options, and procedures, test results and their implications.
Ascertain concerns and questions of patients and address them accordingly.
Support patients' psychosocial needs.
Serve as patient advocate including follow-up such as making referrals for services and financial coverage/authorization, tracking test results and conveying these results to patients and referring physicians.
Provide grief and crisis counseling to individuals and/or families as appropriate. This may include coordination/referral of patient connection to social services, clergy or other resources, based on individual need. - Professional Competency
Employees who are ABGC Board eligible are required to obtain their ABGC Genetic Counselor License within 1 year of hire date. License to be tracked and maintained by the department.
Employees with a CA Temporary Genetic Counselor License are required to obtain their CA Genetic Counselor License within 1 year of hire date. License to be tracked and maintained by the department.
Completion of a Master's degree in Genetic Counseling conferred by a GC program accredited by the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) is required within 90 days of hire. Department is responsible for ensuring completion of education.
